Muscle Car City

This post was originally intended for Florida Fringe Tourism, but I think life has taken Glendon away from the site, possibly for good. So instead, you get it here. Rick Treworgy’s Muscle Car City in Punta Gorda is, in a word, overwhelming. But in the best way. 99,000 square feet of shiny classics beg for a camera, so be sure… (more…)

Adventure Saturday: Nurseries

It was kind of a mini Adventure Saturday today. We’d planned to visit two nurseries. We ended up at three nurseries and a farmer’s market. On our way to the first nursery, we discovered the Old Myakka Farmers Market. It was small, but there was lots of goodness. We left with honey, eggs, and veg, all directly from the folks… (more…)

Adventure Saturday: Braden Castle

Braden Castle isn’t really a castle. It is the ruin of a plantation house built in the 1850s. It passed hands a few times, survived the Civil War, then burned in 1900. In the 1920s, the original snowbirds, the Tin Can Tourists bought the land surrounding the castle and began building cottages. Packed tightly together, with inviting front areas that… (more…)

Adventure Saturday: Bead Show

Today we went to the Gem, Jewelry and Bead Show at Sarasota’s Municipal Auditorium.  I was used to the shows in Portland, where they had a few interesting beads, but mostly it was other people’s work. I got inspired, but I never spent much. This was wonderfully different. There was still some finished work here, but mostly, it was beads… (more…)

Adventure Saturday: Bradenton Farmers’ Market

Bradenton Farmers’ Market is located in downtown Bradenton on Old Main Street. We hadn’t ventured down here yet. It’s a charming vintage business district that reminds me of small towns in Oregon. Very comfy, and less flash than downtown Sarasota. Main Street is lined with restaurants, so there weren’t a whole lot of food booths. Disappointing, as I love farmer… (more…)

Adventure Sunday: Dinosaur World

We decided to take a little road trip today, heading east, then north to Lakeland. We didn’t stop much. It was a beautiful day for driving. As we were leaving Lakeland and headed into Plant City, we saw a sign we could not resist: Dinosaur World. We arrived 45 minutes from closing, so we marched through, snapping photos like mad.… (more…)

Sarasota Medieval Fair

Spent Adventure Saturday at the Sarasota Fairgrounds, ogling some wonderful costumes and enjoying fine, ancient entertainment.

Marietta Museum of Art and Whimsy

Marietta Lee does what I think many artists would love to do–she curates her own museum. Each year she puts up a different show and opens the Marietta Museum of Art and Whimsy in late October.  It’s open for three hours a day, three days a week through tourist season. The collection runs hot and cold, but what is good… (more…)

The Chemist’s Castle

Hoy, I’m so jetlagged today I can barely move. Gah. On to more important things… The second day we all piled into the car and took a drive toward a little tourist walk. On the way we made a stop at the surreal Bli Bli Castle. Bli Bli is a Norman-style castle between the coastal towns of Maroochydore and Noosa… (more…)
