The Yards @ Union Station is a shithole

Let me say that again: The Yards @ Union Station is a shithole.

When I first moved here, it was a land of lovely grounds, clean hallways, and friendly management. All that has gone straight to hell.

Around a month ago, Bill and I noticed our door had been spit on. Well, that will certainly make one wary. I was up late, and just out of paranoia, I looked out the peephole. Through it I saw the guy across the hall duck briefly into his apartment and then back out. He checked both ways down the hall to be sure no one was looking, then he gave my door a good hard kick. Scared the everloving fuck out of me.

Twice more since then, our door has been spit on–but we’re not being singled out. Mister Spitter (who may or may not be the guy across the hall) has hit almost every door on our floor, and–as I just noticed while walking back from reporting the latest incident–all the doors on the first floor as well.

But wait! There’s more! Like the grounds slowly getting more and more neglected. Like the fratboy parties that take three calls to quell. Like the shithead who pulls the fire alarm at 2:00am. Like the time someone shat in the elevator to the pedestrian bridge, and it wasn’t properly cleaned for weeks.

Management’s reaction: a shrug. They can’t do much. Can’t put up a single, cheapo camera in the hallway. Can’t restore the security service that used to patrol.

We’ve had it, and we’re looking elsewhere. So let me say it again: The Yards @ Union Station? Shithole.

Yikes! That sounds dreadful. Too bad the new John Ross Tower condos & apts aren’t finished. It will be right at the base of the new Tram and on the street car line once it extends. The husband is very proud to have the building named after him, too. 🙂

Man, you ain’t kiddin. I lived there years ago when it first opened. Even then there was tons of grafitti and trash everywhere. This was before there was any security at all. The doors were always being left open and random people wandered the halls. That place is far too expensive for that BS. Run as fast as you can.

When I first moved in, about two years ago, it was really quite good. The yards were well kept, janitorial services were good, security was available and effective round-the-clock. It was a little pricey even then, but good enough that we were happy to pay.

There has been a slow decline over the last year or so, the basis of which seems to be ever-increasing cuts in spending. I don’t know whether this is due to greed or necessitated by a downturn in occupancy, but I do know we’re moving.

HAP must be either broke, or a bunch of cheap bastards. We’re bailing from the St. Francis (the shiny HAP building on 11th and Main by the YWCA) because we can clearly see the writing on the wall — it was lovely a year ago and is quickly degenerating. Give it a few more years and it’ll be just like the Yards.

It may be a shithole (love that word) but don’t let it spoil your anniversary – have fun! Love,
    🙂 & :-]

  6. You think it’s bad now? You should have seen the area twelve years ago. I used to live on NW 17th & Lovejoy back in the early nineties, before the yuppies started renovating the area. All those shiny new condos were run-down, partially condemmed hotels and tenement houses from the early 20’s and 30’s, filled with squatters and homeless. Before they could renovate, they had to displace all the homeless. It looks like wherever they pushed them to has pushed ’em right back now.
