Mad Hot War of The Batmen

We’ve had a good run lately. I can highly recommend the last three movies we’ve seen:

  • Batman Begins
Could have trimmed some off the end, but otherwise, excellent. Far and away the best Batman film so far.
  • Mad Hot Ballroom
We were amazed at and envious of the dancing skills exhibited by these fifth-graders. Well, some of them anyway. Take it from two inveterate kid-dislikers (though have you ever noticed that real kids are better than movie kids? See below.), this is one delightful documentary.
  • War of The Worlds
Genuinely scary, and lots of fun. There are a couple of technical flaws early in the movie involving EMP, but they were easy to forget. Dakota Fanning’s character is annoying (see above re: kids), but she’s easy to drown like a wriggling, mewling kitten. Okay, I’m not that bad. I would never drown a kitten.

Huh. I found Dakota Fanning the least annoying child actor I’ve seen in many moons. I thought her performance was genuinely good, reminiscent of those of child actors in the thirties and forties, back when they were cast for skill, not for cuteness. Different strokes, I guess!

Dakota Fanning was amazing–she’s truly a prodigy. Her *character* annoyed the crap out of me.
