The Haunted Calendar is feeling much better these days. It's been re-vamped, is much prettier, and has been updated with new haunts! Additionally, I have finally got off my ass and joined the FrightFest Northwest list, so I hope to have a lot more local yard and home haunts to add. In other news, I have procured my first Halloween injury: a small burn from a hot-wire knife. I am branded. Go me!

Somehow my haunted calendar got very messed. I will get it fixed this weekend. I have been working on it quite a bit to get rid of the extraneous code and make it prettier. Also, I have a couple more events!

Spooky plan the second: hit as many haunts as possible. It's tough to get to a lot of haunts, as so many of them don't open their doors until the last weeks before Halloween. Maximum spookage requires careful planning. I decided to make a calendar for myself from the information I'd gathered, and heck, since I'm making it for myself, why not share? Yes, yes, it's just published to html out of WordPerfect. Honestly, it was the easiest way to do it. I hope to make many updates, and I'll try to remember to announce them here. If you know of an event I should have on there, let me know. I'm especially interested in yard haunts!

Annual Training this year was at Timberline. Despite the rustic location, we had a good time. I'll be planning AT next year, so I'll be keeping in mind the structure of Timberline, which kept us all together and engaged. I don't know if there's another place quite like it, but I'll be looking. Quite unexpectedly, they had their first big snow while we were there. Yet, it cleared off enough for us to drive home safely. Pretty much perfect. Tonight we went to The 13th Door. Their grand opening was last night. This is a fantastic haunt. The props are creative, some of the sets are bloody brilliant, and the actors are good and scary. This is the first time I've seen (or rather, smelled) the use of scent in a haunt. It works to disgusting effect. After the extensive haunt is a small gift shop, where I was able to get a ton of Midnight Syndicate music, and some Red Vampire Gothika Theatrical Contact Lenses. They are more subtle than they look in the picture--very, very creepy. Also comfortable, which is important. Recommendation: this is the last year for 13th Door, so get your ass out there.

Ever have two of something, so you give the first one away thinking you can use the other one, then years later you forget that you gave the first thing away, and you give away the second thing, leaving you with no thing? *sigh* Looks like I have to buy something. UPDATE: Holy shit, I did it twice. Four things, two of which I needed, none of which I have.

So, during WWII, why didn't we call the Germans "germs" instead of "krauts"? Perhaps "germ" is only insulting in a nerdy way, whilst "kraut" is something to which every foot-soldier can relate. Or perhaps germ theory hadn't ignited in the popular imagination in the 40s. I have no idea, I wasn't there. But my father was playing saxaphone. Last night's dream inventory: White-water rafting And no, you naughty stinkers, I had no dirty dreams. And yes, the Spousal Unit was there, but he always is. The man of my dreams.

I've always wondered about vaudeville--what it was really like, and if it could ever be revived. During the TBA festival, there will be a screening of some vaudeville from Portland theaters. And now, I shall regurgitate a press release: Event: Vaudeville Deluxe Long before television, radio, or movies, there was vaudeville: live stage entertainment presented in a variety show format. Many twentieth century stars of motion pictures and television got their start on the live vaudeville stage, The power of live entertainment has been rediscovered, and performers today are returning to the artform. The following TBA:06 artists have vaudeville influences and connections: Brad Adkins Vitaphone Gambols, 1936 Chaz Chase. Chase's stage act included eating lit cigarettes. He appeared on Broadway in the Ziegfeld Follies in 1925 and in Sugar Babies in the 1980's. Hellzapoppin', 1941. Slim Gaillard, Slam Stewart and the fabulous Lindy hoppers, The Harlem Congaroos. This has to be seen to be believed. Two College Boys, 1928 Atteberry & Gillium. Not everyone in Vaudeville was a headliner. Not everyone was talented. Here is an example. The Ranger Song, 1928 J. Harold Murray. Mr. Murray was a huge star both in vaudeville and on Broadway. This is a pre-Vitaphone sound test film. Smash Your Baggage, 1933 You think you work hard for a living. Here's a man who skips rope on his knees. Entertainers from Smalls Paradise. W.C. Field, 1934 W. C. Fields was the most famous juggler in show business before he became a comedian. See for yourself his athletic grace & coordination. Broadway Nights and Hollywood Days, 1930's Ed Sullivan, Eddie Cantor, The Rockettes, Buster Keaton, many others. Ed Sullivan was a newspaper gossip columnist before becoming a TV icon. That Goes Double, 1933 Russ Columbo, Bernice & Emily, Roy Smeck, The Three Cossacks. Russ Columbo was a rival of Bing Crosby. He died tragically at the age of 26 a year after this short was made. Bernice & Emily perform upside down on stairs. Vitaphone Frolics, 1937 Jack and Loretta Clemens, Zeb Carver and Cousins, Stanley Brothers, The Golliwog. Tom Emerson plays bass with Zeb Carver. I'd like to find out more about him. The All Colored Vaudeville Show, 1935 Eunice Wilson, Adelaide Hall, Three Whippets, and the Nicholas Brothers. A cut down version of this was released in 1946 as Dixieland Jamboree. Eddie Peabody and His College Chums, 1928. Eddie Peabody was the Jimi Hendrix of the banjo. Here he is backed by the Hal Kemp Orchestra.
