Meme-forwarding blogger found horribly mutilated.

Or, more (or less) seriously:

The rolex gave the tiger indigestion.

I'll keep this meme to myself, though I think Senn, who helped me with the first one, might do a lovely job at this. But that's not really a tag.

I have returned from my first pottery class. It was challenging, but fun. It took some patience and perseverance to figure out the whole centering gig, but I finally got it, and created the required cylinder.

One of my classmates wore a shirt that said: "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" I've been having a blast learning new things lately. I hope I always have a good answer for that question.

In other news, I have a print of this winging its way to me now. I'm delighted. Now I have to learn framing...

Happy birthday to Elvis

Made a cake for Elvis's birthday last night. The stencil is a little crude--I cut it while the cake was baking. The cake is made with Whey Low, and it is delicious.

I've been getting seriously into making things lately. Yarn and fabric and clay and and...they are like wonderful toys.

Here is my first sewing project:

scarf

Bill has worn that pretty much constantly since I made it. Apparently, he likes it.

Here is the first critter I've made from polymer clay:

bunny

The bunny is very teeny--maybe an inch long. That flaw on his back is a toothmark, as KC thought he looked like a little mousie. This pic is before I glazed him lightly. I think I'd better bring him to work so he doesn't get eaten.

I had an aha-moment the other day. Part of what's kept me from getting onto crafts is that I always feel obligated to finish things. Crafts were "projects" that had to be handled in an adult manner. Well, sod that. I don't have to finish things, I just have to have fun.

When I got in this morning, there was a call from Monica at The Compound, telling me that the waiting list ahead of me had cleared, and there were four Kawasakis unsold. The call had arrived a little while after I left work to go to First Thursday, and the gallery. I would have been able to see Monica and buy a painting last night, but The Compound wasn't letting anyone in before 7pm. That's their prerogative, of course, but it was a little frustrating for the crowd-avoidant, and unexpected, as the place is also a retail business.

So, let's get the count: I went once to see the paintings, knowing I couldn't purchase anything because of the waiting list. Fine, I understand. Then I went again Thursday evening, to be turned away at the (unlocked, for some reason) door.

So after I picked up the message this morning, I decided to hoof it down there as soon as they opened, to see if I could snag a painting. I should have called first, yesiree. I arrived, windblown and pink-faced, to discover that Monica wasn't there. She had "celebrated a little too much" the night before, and wouldn't be in. I asked if either of the other two employees there could handle art sales. Nope, only Monica.

I trudged upstairs to the gallery. I found three of the paintings without "sold" stickers, not four. One of the three was gorgeous, and I would happily take it home, even though I could get three or four computers for the price. But I've been there three times with my wallet out, only to be foiled. Once was fine, twice was nearly tolerable, but thrice?

I spent a long time with the paintings. I looked closely, to see how she draws the figures in pencil then colors them delicately, leaving an ephemeral mark on the wood. Then I walked away.

In August 2005 I gave up sugar. I went hard-core for about a year, and now sugar is back in a very minor role. At the time, I was addicted to Mountain Dew. Sweet, sweet Mountain Dew, elixir of the gods. I haven't had one since. In fact, I haven't had any sugared soda since I quit sugar. If I'm going to have sugar, it's going to be good, dangit, not some nasty can of pop. Sadly, I replaced all that MD with diet drinks. A lot of 'em. Diet Coke, Squirt, and most recently, Diet Sunkist. More than one person warned me against this, but I figured it was better than sugar, and I needed to come down off the taste of sweet things easily.

Yeah, well, guess who developed an allergy to aspartame? Go me. It's very mild, but it was enough to get me to stop with the diet drinks. And lo and behold, suddenly I have all this energy and clarity. I even accomplished an age-old long-term goal of learning PHP, and started to build cool things at work. Apparently, I was hammering myself with diet soda. It may be the allergy that made me feel like crap, but I've heard similar stories anecdotally. Something to think about for diet sludge sluggers.

I'm not proud. I'm eating Chef Boyardee ravioli for breakfast. It's kind of disgusting, but it's all I could stomach. Four days off always gives me a too-much-freedom hangover. I am actually looking forward to going back to work tomorrow.

In other news, I've signed up for a pottery class. FINALLY. For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to throw pottery. So why didn't I? Eh, it's a long, sordid, boring tale of inertia. Four years ago I finally pursued my love of film by taking a fairly ambitious summer class. Found out I kind of liked editing, but I hated the rest of the process. Though it brought me better appreciation of film. I'm hoping the pottery class won't end the same way. I doubt it will.

It's been a joy to find my creativity reappearing over the last year, after an absence of more than a decade. I've been following the Crafter's Central Pool on flickr, and discovering those things I'm drawn to making. I'm attracted to small sewing projects, basic crochet, and some felt projects. I almost never see pottery in the Crafter's Pool. I aim to amend that.
